Why do we make New Year resolutions?

To grow, to make progress and to move forward in life; change is required and this change itself sometimes requires some kind of stimuli, a turning point, a change of weather, a fresh start.. and this is exactly what every New Year offers us a chance to start afresh and live our lives exactly the way we dream't and hence we resolve to do things differently. Whether we pass or fail in our endeavors I think it's important to make a start because sometimes change can only happen slowly.

2011 was the year of lessons and 2012 shall be the year of Grand Plans.

The two most important things I learnt which shall be the guiding principles for my 2012 resolutions are:
  • Only if you love life truly, will life truly love you back. If you are scared and hold back; life will hold back from you too.
  • There is only one question to ask,"What would you do if you were not afraid?"  Asking this to myself always helps me take some of the more difficult decisions in my personal and professional life.
Now moving onto the fun part of actually making my resolutions, first I'll mention some of the basic principles on which my resolutions are based.

  • I want to improve my health. Exercise more, eat healthier and cut back on the toxins.
  • Educate myself further. I already have a college degree but I don't want to just study for a degree. There is so much to know out there and I want to dedicate some amount of time increasing my knowledge.
  • To say "yes" to all the stuff close to my heart including causes ( my favorite animal shelter) and hobbies (painting, cooking).
  • To nurture all my relationships far and close with trust, honesty, respect and love. To keep making deposits in the emotional wealth banks of my relations. A phone call, email, chat, facebook, a lunch date, a drink with the boys... the options are endless. And of course most importantly to love myself and spend time doing things I love, to enrich my mind, body and soul.
  • And last but not the least to live life queen size. Travel, be spontaneous, do random crazy things, laugh till my stomach hurts, to talk without thinking, to explore, have fun and soak it all in.

My actual resolutions should come in a more fun format and I have to think carefully as I am one year away from hitting quarter life crisis and maybe the world will end so 2012 will have to be lived properly and thoroughly.

Cheers!

A Season of Change

It's September, that time of the year again. Time for things to change. Why September you may ask; it may not be so; yet I have seen year after year as July eases past, and August starts marching in... the colors start changing, the colors of life. Soon September is twirling around things with gaiety as I attempt to dance to it's tunes.

   "You are absolutely correct!"
" But if I was in your place..."
" No, I think your first decision is better..."
" Why don't you stay with her, she was looking for  a place?"
" Hey, stay as a paying guest it's best; less worries."
" Nope, how can you share a room with complete strangers!"
" Hey I heard of this place, it's kinda faraway but the rates are good."
" No Power back up, Madam."
" Yes, the place is great, great location too, 45k a month and electricity extra"

My brain is buzzing and I still don't have any place to stay! However what I do know is that there will always be a house to find, a promotion to run after, exams to answer, loans to apply for and bills to wring your hands over. And in the end it's the people who effect you the most, people who too come and go with the change of seasons.
The girl you lived with everyday for three years of college becomes someone you email once a month. Someone you had lunch with everyday, is someone you see once a year and your own sister you grew up with  is in another country and you haven't met her in two years. Your best friends who share a part of your soul now live in cities far away. People you trusted the most for years break your heart.
Change is at my door again. People I shared my life with must go away again, I shall cease to be the center of the universe for someone. Yet Life must go on, it must get a chance to introduce me to new people, new smiles to smile back at, strange sounds of laughter which will soon turn familiar, the sweetness of finding someone as crazy as you, someone who likes the same music as you do or maybe the same books, new conversations, new findings and the same old life which never ceases to change. The perfect note to end and begin things with, comfort for my soul and balm for my heart.. always... a few beautiful lines of poetry.

"Memory is a tenuous thing. . . .
flickering glimpses, blue
and white, like ancient,
decomposing 16mm film.
Happiness escapes
me there, where faces
are vague and yesterday
seems to come tied
up in ribbons of pain.

Happiness? I look for it intead
in today, where memory
is something I can still
touch, still rely on.
I find it in the smiles
of new friends, the hope
blossoming inside.

My happiest memories
have no place in the
past; they are those
I have yet to create."
— Ellen Hopkins

The prompt from Red Dress Club:

Labor Day weekend is almost upon us.
It is a time of transition: summer to fall, kids back to school, no more wearing white..
For this week’s prompt, write about a season of change for your character or you. It can be literal or metaphorical.

A little bit of crazy.. maybe a bit too much

I always like to believe that I am crazy in a good way. Mostly logical and sensible and then when I am on the verge of being boring I must do something exciting. However sometimes... just sometimes I act in ways I want to disown myself later for. There is only one word for them "Crazy Temper Tantrums" which catch me unawares when I am feeling a bit under the weather. I think it must be in my blood, I have heard rumors of CTT in my ancestors too. Either ways as hard as I try to disown CTT as a part of me it comes back to haunt me. Either ways Jane Austen seems to get me. For more context read below:

"I have faults enough, but they are not, I hope, of understanding. My temper I dare not vouch for. It is, I believe, too little yielding— certainly too little for the convenience of the world. I cannot forget the follies and vices of other so soon as I ought, nor their offenses against myself. My feelings are not puffed about with every attempt to move them. My temper would perhaps be called resentful. My good opinion once lost, is lost forever."

Change

What is gone, it cannot come back;
What is to come, it cannot be stopped;
What cannot be stopped you must accept
& What you must accept, you might as well love.

Must do's!

I have to start making my prized lists's.. what if I am 40 years old and don't remember all the books I read and loved or all the places I went to and all the fun stuff I did..worse (making horrified face!) what if I don't remember all the books I Wanted to read and all the places I Wanted to go to!

To A Vagrant Gypsy Life!

In prospect of future Home- less- ness and travel plans; I have bravely decided to stay homeless for two months till  all my travels are not over. Which means no home, no room of my own and no residential address, and also no bills, no land lords and no rent! So I can finally for a short while get to live the crazy gypsy life and not worry about anything... to think that before I was able to take this decision and write this post I was dying of anxiety and tension and shedding copious amounts of tears at timely intervals.
So what do I have to look forward to: packing, moving, giving away stuff, trains, airplanes, roads, visa's and passports.. and also Kolkata and family and of course Europe! It's also the end of lot's of stuff, people going away, homes to say good bye too, memories to cherish and for me new lists, new routines to be made. Friends as usual are coming to the rescue and will be depending on them to give me shelter. But yes, in the end there is always Life to look forward to. To end my post with a appropriate quote:
" In the first few seconds an aching sadness wrenched his heart, but it soon gave away to a feeling of sweet disquiet, the excitement of gypsy wanderlust"
- Mikhail Bulgakov

The Times They Are A-Changin'

Change they say is one of the best things that could happen but we hate it when it happens. I am definitely topping the change hater's list right now, making it very difficult for me to say nice things about life right now. But I guess I am coping and learning and just moving on. And all of this is a good thing, always is.. Change! Of. Course no one like Bob Dylan to put poetry in words....

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Best things that happened on my sick leave ( Post 60)

Illness has kept me away, everything from cold to fever happened over the last few days. However having my mom around was the best possible thing or else I would have died of depression. Instead of mopping around I actually spend the last two days eating healthy home cooked food and actually getting some rest except for the few panic attacks and guilt attacks I got for taking sick leave bang in the middle of the week ( Yes, I am a poor corporate slave!)
Too many things are happening right now, yes I am getting thrown out of my house.. so house hunting ahoy! I really need to clam down or else I am going to have  a heart attack soon. Maybe I should enjoy this and make it sound fancy, think like a gypsy and be excited to face the adventures ahead. Gaah.. who wants adventure and this in fact makes me think about Rincewind one of my favorite character's from Pratchett. So I should end this post with him:

"He'd never asked for an exciting life. What he really liked, what he sought on every occasion, was boredom. The trouble was that boredom tended to explode in your face. Just when he thought he'd found it he'd be suddenly involved in what he supposed other people - thoughtless, feckless people - would call an adventure. And he'd be forced to visit many strange lands and meet exotic and colourful people, although not for very long because usually he'd be running. He'd seen the creation of the universe, although not from a good seat, and had visited Hell and the afterlife. He'd been captured, imprisoned, rescued, lost and marooned. Sometimes it had all happened on the same day."

Started off on a very bad note, landlord problems and I have to do what I hate most.. MOVE!!! But even on the worst of days good things happen.. Hard Rock Cafe, Fries, Catching up with a old friend, KFC's new fiery drums and  a love story, it was enough to make me forget my woes.. for a few hours at least!

The best thing that happened on August 18th, 2011 (Post 56)

A bad day... will probably will me appreciate the good ones! A pep talk from a girl friend did help definitely but what worked best was an early night. Nothing cures a bad day better than ending it early.

The best thing that happened on August 17th, 2011 (Post 55)

Finally doing something that I am really excited about and I actually made a head start on it today. It's a project to bring together animal lover's and help them help out. I have already started work on it and as I lay in bed at night with new ideas coming to my head and me unable to sleep. I realized what it means to be working for something one is really passionate about. I hope all this excitement translates into some real work.

Can cleaning a bathroom make you happy? I realized I have inherited some of my grand ma's fanatical cleaning genes when I spent a whole evening doing exactly this armed with all kinds of ammunition, everything from a broom to a tooth brush, from surface cleaners to detergents. But there is a satisfaction you get in the end when the tiles are sparkling and the mirror is squeaky clean. I think I also burnt quite a few calories. Bathroom cleaning... best thing that happened.. well I never said I was normal and de cluttering does make you happy. For further proof check my favorite blog out here.

The best thing that happened on August 15th, 2011 (Post 53)

Movie at Midnight on a Monday.
Random plan which included as usual some gorging on delicious butter chicken and chicken biriyani.
The theatre wala's then decided that it was not too late to show some patriotism and so we did a round of singing the national anthem at 11pm before the movie started.
I love all animal movies so this one was no exception, I think the little messages they brought out was really great. I left the hall feeling guilty about not checking if my cosmetic brands were animal tested or not. Mental note to myself, must do this week.

Watching the Clouds. Lying on my back on the terrace, all I can see is the blue sky and the layers of clouds blue, white and grey. They drift apart and then back together and of course the favorite childhood game; is it a duck or a tree or  a man with a hat. The breeze is forcing my eyes shut and sending me off to sleep. A must try for a breezy day!

The best thing that happened on August 13th, 2011 (Post 51)

Learning to say it out loud.
Though I usually never have  a problem saying things out loud, sometimes when it's most important and too many feelings are involved I suddenly can't seem to get the right words out. But when I finally did, it was not the moving and heart felt words I imagined I would say but a lot of incoherent ramblings.

I think I got the message across though and I was heard if not understood.
Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions without knowing which one is the right one to take and sometimes you have to walk the tight rope; striking a delicate balance. All I know is that in the end I will have known that I tried and that I gave it my best shot and that will be enough.

The best thing that happened on August 12th, 2011 (Post 50)

On the occasion of my 50th post the best thing that I have done is to get rid of the template which was oh so boring!  As for the best thing that happened, well I discovered that food yet again can cure a bad mood  and to my rescue was home cooked fish rice reminding me of home and making me feel good from inside.

The best thing that happened on August 11th, 2011 (Post 49)

The best thing that happened today was an evening with a girl friend discussing the fickleness of the human mind and laughing at our own follies. We made some serious observations about our own insanity over maggi and chai. Super fun!

The best thing that happened on August 8th, 2011 ( Post 46)

"The best thing that happened today was doing one of my favorite things in the world, what I fondly called "Wandering".
So it basically means I put on a pair of comfortable shoes, sling on a light bag with minimum cash and head out with no particular destination in mind. Staying in Gurgaon means that I feel suffocated by all the concrete and plastic around me at regular intervals. I feel choked by all the glazed windows and shiny cars, what I then crave for is something with more character maybe  a broken building leaning on a banyan tree or the colors of  a local bazaar, something which does not look exactly the same as the next. So I hopped on to the metro at peak hour and as the crowded train took me further away I felt infinitely better.
After some contemplation decided to get off at the INA station and instead of heading to the popular Delhi Haat, I decided to a round of the INA market which is known for it's food market. The shops are all very well organized and for a foodie like me to see rows and rows of beautifully arranged foodstuff including loads of foreign and exotic ranges of pasta, canned foods, sauces, spreads was a gastronomic delight by itself.I also found one of those corner knick knack shops which sell accessories for Rs. 5-10 and indulged myself with a bright red clip and comb for Rs. 15! It was fun to just wander about in the mixed crowd of foreigners, housewives, locals and soak in all the color, noise and organized chaos. By the time I headed back home I was feeling much happier. You should try it too, definite fun in setting off without destination even if you are limited by time and money. There are always interesting local stuff to discover!

It was so super nice to do this after a really long time, talking to mom is like instant therapy and scientific research proves it. Spoke about everything and everyone under the sun and manged to cook pasta alongside. Also one of my favorite shows "Masterchef Australia" started siring it's third season, so it was pasta and masterchef for dinner."

We of course had some hilarious story telling, real stories of embarrassment, bad driving and alcohol. I wish I could relate some of them but it is a public forum but think driving for the first time without a  license and landing up in Goa or maybe without brakes or even with the wrong fuel in the car. I spent an hour trying to figure this out so was pretty happy at the end of it. Also this was the best thing that happened because all day I had friends falling sick; tonsillitis, stomach infections, viral fever even toppling down the stairs; spent a better part of the evening copy pasting "how are you feeling now? to various friends and I hope the replies tomorrow will be more optimistic.

P.S. If you like watching videos on probability does that make you a nerd? However, If you do belong to this category do check khanacademy.org , it's an amazing site if subjects like maths and science interest you.

The best thing that happened on July 17th, 2011 ( Post 24 )

"The best thing that happened today was realizing one of the obvious truths of life that money does not play as big a role as we think in making us happy or unhappy. After a very long time since I started working, I have been going through a  phase of being "broke" which means no shopping, no movies at PVR's and no dinners at fancy restaurants but I realized that I am not unhappy at all. In fact some of the most depressing times of my life have been when I had loads of money around. All I really need to make "me" happy is something worthwhile to work towards, good food, good books, good friends and good conversations and some travel plans in the kitty! What I hope to do is to maintain all that really makes me happy and live life the way my parents taught me to.. High Thinking and Simple Living!"

Although Mr Lazy turned Annoying and refused to let me have my afternoon nap but the egg curry with steamed rice turned out awesome so I didn't mind. I also didn't mind the fact that I was forced to watch Apna Sapna Money Money because in lieu I was taught how to play Rummy and was given my evening chai without having to ask. Nothing says it better than these lines by Robert Frost:
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."

" The best thing that happened today was walking in the rain, stepping on the puddles, feeling the rain soak though my hair, trickle down my face, making me remember my school days when during the monsoon season we would reach school with our shoes and socks soaking from the numerous puddles we unintentionally and intentionally stepped into. I love the rains"

"" The best thing that happened to me today was catching up with a long neglected friend over dinner. It's funny how you don't have a single decent conversation in months and then you meet and you talk like you were never apart and you can pour out your heart without fear of judgement or rejection."

" The best thing that happened to me today was watching a full blown Hollywood action movie after a long time with friends. Transformers 3: The Dark Side of the Moon in the Theater in 3D was awesome fun, it was a visual treat and I am a sucker for the usual Good Vs Evil  stereotype esp when I know that it will all be good in the end."

" The best thing that happened to me today was my outfit. I am no fashionista but wearing an outfit for which I visited the same store thrice before succumbing to temptation gave me an high all day. A beautiful blue skirt, a white vest and a silk scarf did the trick. "

" The best thing that happened to me today was that I started a second blog. I really love collecting quotes and this was the best way for me to put together a collection. There is something about the way a single sentence can be so many things funny, witty, sarcastic, philosophical.. in one sentence or two you can say so much about what you connect with, who you are and what you aspire to be.
Here is the link: Quotes Everyday!"

" The best thing that happened to me today was the wonderful dinner I ate. Steamed rice with melting butter eaten with fluffy omelets.  Some of the best things in life are simple, made with love and often end up in the pit of my stomach."

" The best thing that happened to me today is that I got a new haircut. There is something about sitting in a salon, letting someone snip away at your locks and coming out as a whole new person. It helps that a blow dry always makes you feel and look Gorgeous!"

The best thing that happened on June 23rd, 2011 ( Post 1 )

The best thing that happened to me today is that I got to have a few hours of me time "lazed around in front of the TV after work, cooked my favorite meal, surfed the internet and did some maths."
Super productive and Super fun!
